Bring Your Family to Canada Through Sponsorship

Who Can You Sponsor?

You may be eligible to sponsor:

  • Spouse – Your legally married partner.
  • Common-law Partner – Someone you’ve lived with continuously for at least 12 months in a marriage-like relationship.
  • Conjugal Partner – A partner living outside Canada whom you’ve been in a relationship with for at least one year, but unable to live together due to circumstances beyond your control.
  • Dependent Children – Your biological or adopted children, or those of your partner, under the age of 22 and not married or in a common-law relationship.


Eligibility Requirements for Sponsors

To sponsor a family member, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered under the Canadian Indian Act.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be living in Canada, or prove that you will live in Canada when your sponsored family member arrives.
  • Demonstrate the ability to financially support your family member and ensure they won’t need social assistance.


Your Financial Commitment

When you sponsor a family member, you agree to provide financial support for a specific period:

  • Spouse or Partner: 3 years
  • Dependent Children: 10 years (or until they turn 25, whichever comes first for children under 22)
